School Newspaper
Student newspaper reporters interview and write articles. Students are invited to submit articles, artwork and creative writing, especially for the literacy edition.
Safety Patrols
Fourth and fifth grade students develop responsibility, self-esteem and self-discipline while keeping a watchful eye on their peers.
SCA (Student Cooperative Association)
Trains students in leadership skills and the development of a team spirit.
Daily Dragon Update
White Oaks telivises the morning announcement live through an in-house close circuit system. Student anchors deliver the day's news each morning. Daily segments include "SOL Question of the Day"
4th Grade Lunch Bunch
Fourth Grade Boys Lunch Bunch meets every Wednesday and Thursday from 12:30 - 1:00 in Portable 4 with Mrs. Haws. Nine at-risk boys were chosen by their teachers and the Reading Specialist to participate in the group. The mission statement created by the group is "we will read, eat, talk, laugh, and enjoy good books." So far Lunch Bunch has read Frankenstein Lives on the Fourth Floor and we just finished All the Money in the World and have started True Tales of Animal Heroes.
Library Pages
Students who are in the fourth and fifth grade have the opportunity to work in the library during the week. Their duties range from putting books on shelves, assisting other students, to helping out in various Library functions throughout the year.
Chew and Chat
A book club for selected 3rd graders to boost the enjoyment of reading. Our first novel is The Littles. It will take place on Wednesdays from 12:00 – 12:25. We will “chat” about the selected reading and “chew” on our lunches and desserts. Books are supplied to the readers.
Chorus
The fifth grade chorus at White Oaks meets once a week. They work on a variety of vocal music and perform throughout the school year. Some of our participants are members of the Virginia Beach All City Choral and the Dominion All City Chorus.
CHROME
CHROME is a Hampton Roads organization established to promote a life long interest in Math, Science and Engineering for 4th and 5th graders. Emphasis for membership is directed towards minorities and female students; however, all 4th and 5th grade students are welcomed to join. CHROME club provides students with the opportunities to interact with local scientists and engineers. The Chrome club meets one Thursday a month. |
