Checkout Information:

Our information center houses approximately 15,000 books. Kindergarten and first graders may check out one book and keep it for 1 week’s time. However, first graders will be able to checkout an additional book beginning in January. Second through fourth graders are permitted to check out 2 books at a time and keep them for one week. Fifth graders can check out 3 books at a time for one week. In addition, third through fifth graders may check out one magazine (in addition to their books). Magazines may only be kept overnight and must be returned the next day. Fees are charged only in cases of damage or loss; we have no overdue fines in elementary school. Overdue reminders are distributed every Monday.

Come Join Us for Family Story Hour…

Date: Tuesday, January 19th

Time: 6:00 – 7:00 pm

You and your family will have a story read to them by a local storyteller.

Information about this event will go home in the Tuesday folders – January 5th. Please RSVP by January 12th to Mrs. Stephens.

Our Scholastic Book Fair was a great success!

We sold over $9,000 worth of items! Profit from the Book Fair will go toward library materials and equipment!

Virginia Readers’ Choice (formerly known as Virginia Young Readers)

Virginia Readers’ Choice is a program sponsored by the Virginia State Reading Association. Every year the VSRA choose a list of 10 books each for the primary, elementary, middle school, and high school students. Students are encouraged to read the books from their list. If the student reads at least 4 of the books, they are permitted to vote for their favorite. Students will vote in early April. Students can comment on the books on our Library Blog.

This year’s nominated books are:

Primary Titles (grades K-3)

Elementary Titles (Grades 3-5)

Accelerated Reader:

Our Accelerated Reader program is up and running. The White Oaks Library has over 7,000 A.R. tests available for students. You are welcome to browse through our Accelerated Reader Quiz Online. You can search by author, title or level. If you can't find the book in the White Oaks Library, you can also try the Virginia Beach Public Library.

Prizes are given on a point by point basis.

Our theme for Accelerated Reader this year is “Out of This World.” Kindergarten – 2 nd grade students earn their star when they reach 3 AR points. Students in grade 3 – 5 earn their star when they have earned 5 AR points. After that, for every 5 points earned students receive a star sticker on their star.

Students also receive BONUS books after achieving a certain number of points. 1 st grade – 10 points; 2 nd grade – 20 points; 3 rd grade – 30 points; 4 th grade – 40 points; 5 th grade – 50 points. Once students have earned their bonus books, they checkout an extra library for the rest of the year.

When students reach 100 AR points, they get their picture taken and receive a free book from the library. Their picture is displayed on the wall in the hallway by the library! At the end of the school year, all students who have earned 100 or more AR points get to attend a pizza party in the library!

Students who earn 200 AR points get another BONUS book. Their picture is taken again and they are put on the Totally Terrific 200 Point Club board in the library.

Students who earn 300 AR points get another BONUS book. Their picture is taken again and they are put on the AR Hall of Fame board in the library.

As of this date, we have two students who have earned over 500 points!
