White Oaks Elementary Library
Mrs. Joan Stephens, Library Media Specialist
Mrs. Linda Lotz, Library Media Assistant

Hours of Operation:  8:10 a.m. – 2:55 p.m. daily

The mission of White Oaks library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of information.

White Oaks Library has a fixed/flexible schedule which allows students to check out books and use the library any time between 8:10 a.m. and 2:55 p.m. daily. Kindergarten through second grade classes have a scheduled biweekly library lesson time. Third through fifth grade students come to the library as a class for lessons and/or research. We have 6 computers in the library for student use. Unless these are being utilized for research stations, they are available for Accelerated Reader quizzes, on-line access using specific search directories, and our online library catalog to search for books and reference information.
Checkout Information:
Our information center houses approximately 15,000 books.  Kindergarten and first graders may check out one book and keep it for 1 week’s time.  Second through fourth graders are permitted to check out 2 books at a time and keep them for one week.  Fifth graders can check out 3 books at a time for one week.  In addition, third through fifth graders may check out one magazine (in addition to their books); however, magazines can only be kept overnight and must be returned the next day.   Fees are charged only in cases of damage or loss; we have no overdue fines in elementary school. Overdue reminders are distributed every Monday.
Virginia Readers’ Choice (formerly known as Virginia Young Readers)
Virginia Readers’ Choice is a program sponsored by the Virginia State Reading Association.  Every year the VSRA choose a list of 10 books each for the primary, elementary, middle school, and high school students.  Students are encouraged to read the books from their list.  If the student reads at least 4 of the books, they are permitted to vote for their favorite.   Students will vote in early April.

Accelerated Reader:

Our Accelerated Reader program is up and running.  The White Oaks Library has over 6,000 A.R. tests available for students.  You are welcome to browse through our Accelerated Reader Quiz Online. You can search by author, title or level.  If you can't find the book in the White Oaks Library, you can also try the Virginia Beach Public Library.

Prizes are given on a point by point basis.

Students also receive BONUS books after achieving a certain number of points.  1st grade – 15 points; 2nd grade – 20 points; 3rd grade – 30 points; 4th grade – 40 points; 5th grade – 50 points.  Once students have earned their bonus books, they checkout an extra library for the rest of the year.

Library Pages

White Oaks now has Library Pages.  Selected students in the 4th and 5th grade submitted applications, showed their knowledge, and went through an interview to be accepted into this groundbreaking program.  The students are special library helpers.  Their duties include:  sorting and placing books on shelves, assisting students with finding books, and assisting Mrs. Stephens with projects.  Our Library Pages are doing a great job!  We will be accepting applications for a few open slots very soon.  Stay tuned for more information for next school year.

That’s all for now!

See you in the Library,

Mrs. Stephens
